Wale Edun Removed as Nigeria's Finance Minister in Tinubu's Cabinet Reshuffle

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has removed Wale Edun as Nigeria's Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy in a minor cabinet reshuffle, elevating Minister of State Taiwo Oyedele to the substantive position . The change, announced on April 21, 2026, also saw the removal of Housing and Urban Development Minister Ahmed Musa Dangiwa .

The directive, communicated through a memo signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, ordered Edun to hand over to Oyedele, while Dangiwa was directed to transfer responsibilities to the Minister of State in the housing ministry . All handover processes are to be completed by the close of business on Thursday, April 23, 2026 .

Official Reason for the Reshuffle

According to the statement released by Yomi Odunuga, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the SGF, the changes are "aimed at strengthening cohesion, synergy in governance as well as achieving more impactful delivery on the economy to Nigerians, through the Renewed Hope Agenda" .

President Tinubu exercised his constitutional powers under Sections 147 and 148 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) to effect the changes . The President thanked the outgoing ministers for their service and wished them well in their future endeavors .

Oyedele's Rise and Background

Taiwo Oyedele's elevation follows a rapid ascent within the administration. He was appointed Minister of State for Finance in March 2026, replacing Doris Uzoka-Anite, who was redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and National Planning .

Oyedele previously served as Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he spearheaded the successful passage of the administration's tax reform legislations . His appointment as substantive minister now places him at the helm of Nigeria's economic policy coordination.

For the Housing Ministry, Muttaqha Rabe Darma (PhD) has been named as ministerial nominee and minister-designate, pending confirmation .

Background: Signs of an Impending Exit

The removal, while formally announced as a routine reshuffle, follows months of speculation about tensions between Edun and the presidency. Reports from December 2025 indicated that core statutory responsibilities had been quietly transferred away from Edun through internal presidential directives, sharply narrowing his operational control within the ministry .

According to earlier reports, a rift emerged over revenue performance figures. While the President publicly declared revenue targets were being met, Edun reportedly presented different figures to global financial institutions including the World Bank and IMF—figures that reflected economic realities rather than political optimism .

The depth of the disagreement became public during a Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) meeting, where Edun arrived to chair the session only to be confronted by his Minister of State, who had instructions to preside instead. The standoff forced an adjournment, and by the end of the day, the Minister of State returned alone to chair the meeting .

Analysis: Loyalty Not Enough

Political analysts note that Edun's removal carries significance beyond a simple cabinet shuffle. Edun was not just another cabinet member; he was a long-time Tinubu ally and one of the figures most closely associated with the administration's economic reform posture .

His removal suggests that loyalty and long association may not always be sufficient protection where the presidency believes sharper execution or clearer policy coherence is required . The move appears to confirm that the internal fragmentation of authority around the finance ministry observed in late 2025 was not a temporary experiment but the prelude to a definitive transition.

President Tinubu assured all cabinet members that "the process of reinvigoration shall be continuous" .
