In a dramatic Western Conference showdown Thursday night at the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona, the Phoenix Suns stunned the Los Angeles Lakers with a 113–110 victory thanks to a clutch game-winning 3-pointer by Royce O’Neale with just 0.9 seconds remaining. The loss marked the Lakers’ third consecutive defeat in a stretch raising questions about their late-season form and defensive consistency.

With the game tied late in regulation, the Suns overcame a 13-point second-half deficit and seized momentum in the closing minutes. After a late tip-in by LeBron James tied the score at 110 with about 22 seconds left, the Suns executed a decisive final possession. Guard Grayson Allen drove toward the basket and found Collin Gillespie , who set up O’Neale for the clean, go-ahead triple — the dagger that sealed the victory for Phoenix. 

The Lakers had one final chance, but Austin Reaves’ wide-open corner 3-pointer at the buzzer rimmed out, extending Los Angeles’ slide.

Despite the loss, the Lakers were led by an exceptional night from Luka Dončić , who poured in 41 points, added eight rebounds and eight assists, and hit six 3-pointers. His 41-point outing marked the ninth 40-point game of the season — an achievement that places him alongside some of the franchise’s all-time great scorers in Lakers history. 

LeBron James chipped in 15 points, and Marcus Smart scored 13, but overall production from supporting scorers was insufficient to counter Phoenix’s barrage from deep. 

For the Suns, Allen scored 28 points, connecting on six triples, while Gillespie also hit six 3-pointers and finished with 21 points. Phoenix shot 22-for-50 (44%) from beyond the arc, overpowering Los Angeles from long range.

Phoenix’s win improves its record to 34–26 , while the Lakers fall to 34–24 — keeping the two teams neck-and-neck in the Western Conference playoff hunt. The Suns now hold the season series with Los Angeles and have crucial tiebreaker leverage should the teams remain close down the stretch. 

Notably, Phoenix achieved this result without key contributors Devin Booker (hip strain) and Dillon Brooks (hand injury), both sidelined at the time — underlining the Suns’ depth and resiliency.

For the Lakers, this marks the third straight setback after close losses to the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics , raising concerns about consistency and late-game execution. Defensive lapses and perimeter coverage were repeatedly exposed against Phoenix’s hot shooting.
