University of Ibadan Retains Status as Nigeria’s Leading University in 2026

The University of Ibadan (UI) has once again reinforced its reputation as Nigeria’s foremost tertiary institution, emerging as the country’s highest-ranked university in the 2026 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings .
In the latest global assessment, UI was placed within the 801–1000 band worldwide , ahead of other Nigerian universities, reaffirming its long-standing position as a centre of academic excellence and research leadership in the country.
Strong Global and Subject Rankings
Beyond its overall ranking, the University of Ibadan also recorded impressive performances in subject-specific evaluations. In the World University Rankings by Subject 2026 , UI was rated the best Nigerian university in Law and Medicine , with its Law programme ranked in the 301–400 global category . The achievement highlights the institution’s strength in teaching, research output, and professional training across critical disciplines.
High Admission Demand and Competitive Entry
The university’s reputation continues to drive intense competition for admission. During the 2025/2026 Post-UTME screening exercise , more than 14,000 candidates applied for limited undergraduate spaces. Due to quota regulations, only a fraction of applicants are admitted annually, underscoring UI’s highly competitive admission process.
