Crystal Palace Overcome Zrinjski Mostar to Secure Conference League Last-16 Berth
Crystal Palace kept their European dream alive on Thursday night, overcoming a determined Zrinjski Mostar side with a 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park to progress 3-1 on aggregate in the UEFA Conference League knockout round play-offs .
In what was described as the "biggest night of the Eagles' season," first-half goals from Maxence Lacroix and a stoppage-time strike from Evann Guessand ensured Oliver Glasner's men advanced to the last 16, where they will face either German side Mainz 05 or Cypriot outfit AEK Larnaca .
FirsHalf Breakthrough Calms Nerves
After a frustrating 1-1 draw in the first leg in Bosnia, the tie was delicately poised. However, Palace began with renewed intensity at Selhurst Park. The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute when Adam Wharton delivered a delightful free-kick for French defender Maxence Lacroix to power a header home, settling any early nerves .
The goal was a reward for a much-improved performance from the hosts, who had struggled for consistency in recent months. Glasner appeared to find a successful tactical formula, with his side playing more direct football and pressing with intent against the Bosnian champions' low block .
Late Strike Seals Progression
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, Palace had to wait until first-half stoppage time to confirm their progression. Evann Guessand finished the tie in the 93rd minute, tapping home from close range to spark celebrations among the home supporters .
The victory was particularly significant given the turmoil surrounding the club in recent weeks. Glasner, who has already announced he will leave at the end of the season, has faced calls for his dismissal from some fans during a dismal run of form. Prior to Thursday, Palace had won just two of their previous 16 matches across all competitions .
Glasner's Tactical Adjustment Pays Dividends
Glasner's tactical tweak proved decisive on the night. The Austrian coach abandoned some of his more patient build-up play in favour of a more direct approach, which troubled the Zrinjski defence throughout .
Crystal palace manager, Oliver Glasner
"Right when they needed them, Crystal Palace's big players stepped up," the report noted, highlighting the contributions of Wharton, Lacroix, and the lively Jorgen Strand Larsen, who caused problems with his relentless running in behind .
Richards: "We Have to Finish This at Home"
The victory justified the optimism expressed by defender Chris Richards following the first leg. After the 1-1 draw in Mostar, the American international had mixed emotions but remained confident about the return fixture.
"There's a reason why they're in the Conference League. They're a good team and they defended well," Richards told Palace TV after the first leg,
"But 1-1 is something you can take into the next leg with a lot of optimism. There are mixed emotions, but in the big picture, we have to finish this at home now" .
Stimac's Warning Unheeded
Zrinjski manager Igor Štimac, the former Croatia international and West Ham defender, had attempted to add spice to the tie ahead of the second leg. Speaking before the match, Štimac criticised the Palace board for a "lack of ambition" and highlighted his own history against the Eagles, having been part of the Derby County side that beat Palace in the 1996 play-off final .
However, his side was unable to repeat those heroics. While they defended doggedly and employed gamesmanship to disrupt Palace's rhythm, they rarely threatened Dean Henderson's goal. Zrinjski's Conference League away record this season now reads played six, lost six, without scoring a single goal .
Looking Ahead
The victory provides a significant boost for Palace as they look to salvage a positive end to a difficult season. The win over Wolves at the weekend had already lifted them 10 points clear of the Premier League relegation zone, and European progression offers a tangible target for the remainder of the campaign .
The Eagles will discover their last-16 opponents in Friday's draw, with either Mainz 05 or AEK Larnaca lying in wait. For a club competing in Europe for the first time in its history, the dream of a run to the final in Leipzig in May remains very much alive .
