Volendam Stun Sparta Rotterdam

Volendam produced a dramatic late comeback to defeat Sparta Rotterdam 2–1 on Wednesday night, booking a place in the quarter-finals of the KNVB Beker and ending the hosts’ cup campaign at Het Kasteel. Volendam, who came into the Round of 16 clash as underdogs, showed resilience and clinical finishing to upset Sparta Rotterdam in front of their home supporters. The visitors struck first in the 13th minute when Brandley Kuwas capitalised on defensive hesitation to give Volendam an early advantage. Sparta responded positively and were rewarded before halftime as Ayoni Santos levelled the score with a composed finish, restoring parity and swinging momentum back to the hosts. Sparta dominated possession for large periods of the second half and created several chances, but were repeatedly denied by Volendam goalkeeper Filip Stanković, whose series of saves proved crucial. The hosts’ inability to convert their dominance ultimately proved costly. Deep into stoppage time, Volendam delivered the decisive blow. Veteran striker Robert Mühren rose to the occasion in the 91st minute, slotting home the winning goal and silencing the home crowd as Volendam sealed a memorable away victory. Despite recording more shots and enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Sparta Rotterdam were left to rue missed opportunities, while Volendam’s efficiency in front of goal made the difference. The result sees FC Volendam advance to the quarter-final stage of the Dutch Cup, marking one of their most significant cup achievements in recent seasons. Sparta Rotterdam, meanwhile, bow out of the competition and will now turn their focus back to their Eredivisie campaign. Earlier this season, Sparta had edged Volendam 1–0 in league action, but the Cup encounter underlined Volendam’s growing competitiveness and ability to rise to the occasion in knockout football. The quarter-final draw is expected later this month, with Volendam hoping to continue their fairytale run in the KNVB Beker.
