Nottingham Forest Edge Closer to Safety as Aston Villa's Champions League Hopes Take a Hit

 By Akins Wandex

Nottingham Forest took a significant step toward Premier League survival on Sunday, securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Champions League-chasing Aston Villa at a rain-soaked City Ground .

The result, witnessed by 30,591 spectators, moves Vitor Pereira's side three points clear of the relegation zone following Tottenham Hotspur's 1-0 defeat at Sunderland . For Unai Emery's Villa, the dropped points represent a missed opportunity to leapfrog Manchester United into third place, leaving them level on 55 points with the Red Devils but having played one game more .

Early Villa Lead Cancelled by Williams Stunner

The visitors struck first in the 23rd minute, albeit with a significant stroke of fortune. Morgan Rogers' low cutback from the byline cannoned off the unfortunate Murillo, with the Brazilian defender's desperate attempt to clear leaving him tangled in the back of his own net .

However, Forest responded decisively seven minutes before the interval. Neco Williams, who had been urged by his manager to shoot more often from distance, drilled an unstoppable first-time right-footed strike from 18 yards inside Marco Bizot's near post .

The goal carried extra significance for the Welsh international, who told Sky Sports: "The manager has been telling me to shoot outside the box more and that's what I did today. I took a few and one went in, so I'm pleased with that" .

Goalkeeping Drama Unfolds Before Kick-Off

The match was overshadowed by late drama in the Villa camp, as World Cup-winning goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez pulled out during the warm-up for the third time this season, complaining of calf pain . His deputy, Marco Bizot, received just 25 minutes' notice before being thrust into action .

"I have no idea what happened," the Dutch goalkeeper admitted post-match. "I noticed Emi went inside, then the goalkeeping coach came up to me and told me to prepare for the game. That was 25 minutes before kick-off" .

Emery, while diplomatic, declined to offer unequivocal backing to his first-choice goalkeeper. "He was telling us, just in the warm-up, he was not feeling comfortable with his calf. He was feeling pain," the Villa manager explained. "Of course, the most important thing is how Marco responded to this circumstance. It's really fantastic" .

Rogers Miss Proves Costly

The second half was a tale of wasted opportunities, with Villa's Morgan Rogers enduring an afternoon to forget despite his role in the opener. The England midfielder struck the crossbar moments before Forest's equaliser, then produced what may be the miss of the season in the 65th minute .

After Matz Sels parried Ross Barkley's low drive, the ball fell invitingly to Rogers just yards from goal. With the net gaping, the 23-year-old blazed his effort over the crossbar, prompting Emery to crash to his knees in disbelief on the touchline .

Rogers has now failed to score or assist in his last seven Premier League appearances, his longest barren run since breaking into the Villa first team .

Ollie Watkins, chasing his 100th goal for the club, also spurned a glorious chance 11 minutes from time when Emiliano Buendía released him in behind, only to lash his finish over the bar .

Pereira Hails 'Fighter's Spirit'

Forest manager Vitor Pereira, who has overseen an upturn in fortunes since his arrival, praised his side's resilience after weathering sustained second-half pressure.

"It was a good point in a difficult game against a very difficult opponent," Pereira told *Sky Sports*. "Opportunities from one side, opportunities from the other. In the end, one point I think is a good result" .

The Portuguese coach, whose side are now unbeaten in five matches across all competitions, struck a defiant tone regarding his team's mentality. "We need to show the spirit of a champion, the spirit of a fighter without complaining," he said. "I know teams and players who prefer to be the victims – we prefer to be the fighters" .

Pereira also confirmed the return of veteran striker Chris Wood, who made his first league appearance since October following knee surgery

 Emery Remains Upbeat Despite Setback

Despite his side's profligacy, Emery refused to be downbeat, emphasising the broader context of Villa's recent resurgence. "I am happy with how we played, how we competed and followed the game plan," he said. "Three months we were fantastic, then we struggled, now we are recovering" .

On Rogers, Emery offered strong public backing. "He is having a fantastic season. He is part of everything offensively we have. His quality and his attitude is really fantastic. Sometimes he needs rest because he is playing and playing and playing" .

Bizot, however, was less forgiving in his assessment. "We came here for a win, of course," the goalkeeper admitted. "We tried everything in our power to take a win, but unfortunately we end up with one point. It's not enough" .

The result sets up a pivotal week for both clubs. Forest will host Porto in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday, before welcoming second-bottom Burnley to the City Ground next Sunday in a crucial relegation six-pointer .

Villa, who lead Bologna 3-1 from the first leg, will aim to secure their own European progression on Thursday before entertaining Sunderland .

For Pereira's men, the immediate priority remains clear. "Every game for us now is a cup final," Williams declared. "Every point is so important. We need to build and carry on with this momentum" .
