Newcastle Falter Again as Mateta Inspires Palace to Thrilling Victory

By Akins Wandex

Crystal Palace produced a stunning late turnaround to secure a 2–1 victory over Newcastle United at Selhurst Park, with substitute Jean-Philippe Mateta emerging as the match-winner in a dramatic finish.

Newcastle appeared on course for a crucial away victory after taking the lead just before halftime. William Osula capitalized on a defensive lapse to score from close range, giving the visitors a 1–0 advantage despite Crystal Palace enjoying the better share of early chances.

The goal came somewhat against the run of play, with Palace having earlier threatened through a series of attacking moves that tested Newcastle’s defensive organisation.

Second-Half Momentum Shift

After the restart, Palace increased their attacking intensity, pushing Newcastle deeper into their own half. Manager Oliver Glasner made key tactical changes, introducing fresh attacking options that injected energy into the hosts’ play.

Newcastle, meanwhile, struggled to maintain control, continuing a worrying trend of failing to capitalize on leads—a recurring issue highlighted throughout their season.

Mateta’s Late Heroics

The turning point came in the 80th minute when Mateta rose highest to head home the equalizer, capping off sustained pressure from the hosts.

With momentum firmly on their side, Palace continued to press, and their persistence paid off deep into stoppage time. A foul inside the penalty area handed them a decisive opportunity, which Mateta converted with composure to complete the comeback.

Crystal Palace’s victory was built on resilience, effective substitutions, and a well-executed attacking strategy in the latter stages of the match. Their wing play and aerial threat proved decisive, particularly in the build-up to both goals.

In contrast, Newcastle’s inability to sustain attacking momentum and close out games once ahead continues to undermine their campaign. Reports indicate the team has dropped a significant number of points from winning positions this season—an issue that has drawn criticism from manager Eddie Howe.

The result represents a significant boost for Crystal Palace as they build momentum in the closing stages of the season, while Newcastle’s European ambitions suffer another setback following a third consecutive defeat.

In a match defined by shifting momentum and late drama, Crystal Palace demonstrated resilience and attacking quality to overturn a first-half deficit.

For Newcastle, the defeat highlights persistent issues with game management, while Palace’s resurgence under Glasner continues to gather pace at a crucial stage of the campaign.
