Liverpool Teenager Ngumoha Breaks Record as Reds Secure Crucial Victory Over Fulham

By Akins Wandex

Liverpool secured a much-needed 2-0 victory over Fulham at Anfield on Saturday, with 17-year-old winger Rio Ngumoha breaking a 14-year club record with his first Premier League goal on home soil .

The win, which marked Liverpool's first league victory since February, came at a critical juncture for manager Arne Slot following painful cup quarter-final defeats at Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain . The result also saw the club reach the historic landmark of 1,500 league wins at Anfield, a feat achieved 133-and-a-half years after their first .

Ngumoha Ends Anfield Drought in Style

In a first half otherwise described as subdued, Ngumoha electrified the contest in the 36th minute. Picking up the ball on the left flank after referee Anthony Taylor played advantage following a foul on Cody Gakpo, the teenager produced a series of step-overs to bewilder Fulham defender Timothy Castagne before curling a sublime finish beyond goalkeeper Bernd Leno and into the far corner .

The goal carried historical significance, making Ngumoha Liverpool's youngest league goalscorer at Anfield at 17 years and 225 days. He surpassed the record previously held by Raheem Sterling, who was 17 years and 317 days old when he scored against Reading in October 2012 .

Slot, who has shown increasing faith in the youngster, was effusive in his praise after the match. "He has a special quality that you don't see very often in football any more – dominating the one-on-one," Slot told reporters. "That was a Mo Salah-finish. In training during the last month we saw he had more and more power to hit the ball like he did today" .

Salah Doubles Lead as Veteran and Youth Combine

Just four minutes after Ngumoha's opener, Liverpool doubled their advantage through their departing icon. The teenager was again instrumental, confidently taking on three Fulham players before clipping a pass to Gakpo. The Dutch forward laid the ball off for Mohamed Salah, who curled a clinical finish inside Leno's far post .

The goal marked Salah's sixth Premier League strike of the season and his first since announcing he will leave the club at the end of the campaign . Speaking after the match, captain Virgil van Dijk highlighted the importance of the quickfire double. "Of course scoring the first goal is very important," Van Dijk said. "Playing against Fulham who haven't played in a while so we had to be ready and patient. Our first half was good" .

Protests Simmer as Atmosphere Flatten

The on-field action played out against a backdrop of supporter unrest regarding club policy. The match was notable for the absence of flags on the Kop, part of organised protests against Liverpool's decision to increase most ticket prices in line with the rate of inflation for the next three seasons .

A flat atmosphere for much of the contest was punctuated only by a banner reading 'No to ticket prices increases' paraded along the front of the Kop in the 14th minute, accompanied by chants directed at the club's ownership. Supporters group Spirit of Shankly had called for the action, arguing the club's decision sets a "precedent" across the game . Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan has since defended the increases, citing an 85% rise in matchday operating costs over the last decade .

Slot Faces Defensive Injury Blow

While the victory provided a timely boost, it came at a potential cost. Midfielder Curtis Jones was forced off at half-time after suffering a groin injury, with Slot confirming the issue is likely to rule him out of Tuesday's crucial Champions League quarter-final second leg against PSG .

Liverpool trail the European champions 2-0 from the first leg in Paris, and Slot faces a decision on whether to hand Ngumoha a starting role in the high-stakes encounter. "I think he's ready," Slot stated when asked about the prospect. "The question is can he do it again two days later? But would he be able to perform at that level? Yes"
