Court admits new evidence in Emefiele,a former CBN governor’s trial.

Ongoing Legal and Court ProceedingEmefiele is currently being tried in a Lagos High Court (Special Offences Court in Ikeja) on charges including abuse of office, corruption, and alleged $4.5 billion fraud. His co-defendant, Henry Omoile, is also on trial.In court recently, the defence alleged the EFCC (anti-graft agency) pressured Omoile to implicate Emefiele, a claim made by the second defendant’s lawyer.Earlier in this case, the EFCC countered that statements were voluntarily made by co-accused.The court has admitted fresh evidence in the trial in late 2025, indicating the case is actively moving forward. In September 2025, the court allowed Emefiele to conduct an independent forensic review of WhatsApp messages and mobile phone evidence tendered against him in the fraud case, a key procedural development in his defence. Hundreds of duplexes and apartments (753 units) linked to Emefiele were seized by the government and are planned for development and sale to citizens. In 2025, the EFCC and Ministry of Housing inspected the confiscated estate as part of implementing this plan. Emefiele was also arraigned on charges related to the forfeited housing estate, and was granted bail under stringent conditions in June 2025. A Nigerian court ordered the final forfeiture of US$1.4 million linked to Emefiele as suspected proceeds of unlawful activities Some public figures, like former CBN Deputy Governor Kingsley Moghalu, have criticized Emefiele’s tenure, calling it disastrous and politically influenced rather than technocratic Emefiele’s post-CBN period has been dominated by high-profile legal battles over alleged corruption and abuse of office during and after his term. There continues to be public scrutiny and debate around his legacy and accountability, with opinions ranging from harsh criticism to occasional calls for reassessment of his policies.
